The Cantabrian writer donated to Santander his entire bibliographic legacy as well as the building housing it on the condition that it was always kept together. In total there are about 42,000 volumes, including 23 incunabula and very valuable manuscripts by Quevedo, Lope de de Vega and Menéndez Pelayo himself. To store them together, the building was remodelled as a public centre. The project, led by architect Leonardo Rucabado, included regionalist and Baroque elements as well as a small garden, where a sculpture of the Cantabrian writer by Mariano Benlliure was placed later.
